A good quality liquid flux such as Bakers must be used to prep the inner wire and fitting before soldering. If an old used and or oiled cable, pre-clean using acetone. On galvanized wire ( do a magnet test) use a tin/lead type solder, the higher the tin content the better, preferably 60/40. The better you can birds nest the cable end before soldering will help guarantee a lifetime connection.
